Nasa is urging Americans to watch the August 12 total solar eclipse, even though most of the US will not see totality. The reason is simple: Europe is about to witness its first total solar eclipse in 27 years. The last total eclipse visible from central and western mainland Europe was in 1999. On August 12, the Moon’s shadow will again sweep across parts of Europe, including Iceland and northern Spain. The rare event will give millions of people a chance to see the Moon completely cover the Sun. NASA will also livestream the eclipse, allowing Americans and other viewers outside the path of totality to watch it online.The eclipse will last for a maximum of 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Nasa is highlighting the event as both a major science event and a rare skywatching experience.

Europe will see total solar eclipse after 27 years

The August 12 eclipse is special because it marks the return of totality to central and western mainland Europe after 27 years. The previous total solar eclipse visible from these parts of Europe took place on August 11, 1999. Since then, no total eclipse path has crossed central or western mainland Europe.This time, the path of totality will pass over parts of Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, before reaching the Balearic Islands. A small part of Portugal will also fall within the path. For people standing inside the narrow path, the Moon will completely block the bright face of the Sun. Daylight will briefly turn dark and the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, will become visible.

Where and when to watch the total solar eclipse

As mentioned, the total solar eclipse will take place on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The Moon’s shadow will travel across the Northern Hemisphere before reaching Europe. Totality will be visible from parts of Iceland and Spain, while much of the rest of Europe will see a partial solar eclipse.The longest totality will last about 2 minutes and 18 seconds, with some of the best views expected from Iceland.

How to watch the total solar eclipse

People outside the path of totality will not have to miss the event. Nevertheless, Nasa will livestream the total solar eclipse, with coverage beginning at 1:15 p.m. EDT. The broadcast will include live views from locations along the eclipse path, along with commentary from Nasa scientists and eclipse experts.The European Space Agency will also provide live coverage from Spain, giving viewers another way to follow the event.

Will Americans see the August 12 eclipse

The US will not see totality on August 12. However, parts of the country will experience a partial solar eclipse. Alaska and 26 US states are expected to see at least part of the eclipse. Canada will also see the partial eclipse across all its provinces and territories.It is important to state that anyone watching a partial solar eclipse must use certified eclipse glasses or a safe solar filter. Looking directly at the Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage.

August 12 starts a rare eclipse period

The 2026 eclipse is also the beginning of an unusual period for eclipse watchers. On August 2, 2027, another total solar eclipse will cross southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Totality will last as long as 6 minutes and 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt, making it the longest land-based total solar eclipse between 1991 and 2114.The third event will arrive on July 22, 2028, when totality crosses parts of Australia and New Zealand.

On This Day in Space: NASA launched the 100-foot Echo 1A balloon on August 12, 1960; the passive satellite reflected telephone, radio and television signals across Earth

Exactly sixty-six years ago from today, on August 12, 1960, NASA launched Echo 1A, a 100-foot-diameter balloon that became the agency’s first successful communications satellite. Unlike modern communication satellites, Echo 1A did not actively transmit signals. Instead, its large reflective surface bounced telephone, radio and television signals between distant points on Earth.According to NASA, the satellite was launched on a Thor-Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Once in orbit, residual air inside the folded balloon expanded, turning it into a large reflective sphere about 30 metres wide.The launch was part of NASA’s early effort to explore how objects in space could be used to improve long-distance communication. The idea was to send a signal towards a large object in orbit, reflect it off the surface and receive it at another location on Earth.Echo 1A was designed specifically for this purpose. It was a passive communications reflector. It did not receive and retransmit signals using its own communication system, but its job was to act as a giant reflector in space.The spacecraft was made from Mylar polyester and measured about 100 feet in diameter. Its large, shiny surface allowed it to reflect signals back towards Earth. The balloon was also bright enough to be seen from the ground as it passed overhead.

Echo I and 1A

The successful launch of Echo 1A came after an earlier attempt to put a similar satellite into orbit had failed. The original Echo I satellite was lost during an unsuccessful launch attempt in May 1960.NASA then launched Echo 1A on August 12. Once in orbit, the balloon expanded and became a large reflective surface around Earth.The satellite was built from a very thin sheet of Mylar polyester film. The sheet covered about 31,416 square feet and was 0.0127 millimetres thick. It was covered with a reflective aluminium coating, while the entire spacecraft weighed about 132 pounds.

The first signal

Echo 1A could be used for transcontinental and intercontinental telephone, radio and television signals. A few hours after its launch, the satellite reflected its first message. The radio signal travelled from California to Bell Labs in New Jersey after bouncing off Echo 1A.The message was an address by then US President Dwight Eisenhower. He said, “The satellite balloon, which has reflected these words, may be used freely by any nation for similar experiments in its own interest.”According to EDN, Echo 1A was also used by amateur radio operators, who were able to bounce signals off the satellite. NASA released daily schedules showing when and where the balloon could be seen overhead.

Use in research

The satellite was not limited to communication experiments. NASA used Echo 1A to collect information that helped with calculations of atmospheric density and solar pressure.The spacecraft was also used to examine the technical feasibility of satellite triangulation, which could improve mapping precision.At the Goldstone tracking station in California’s Mojave Desert, Jet Propulsion Laboratory used two 85-foot-diameter antennas to send and receive signals through Echo 1A.Those antennas later became part of NASA’s Deep Space Network, which communicates with spacecraft travelling to the Moon and beyond.The Echo programme continued after the launch of Echo 1A. NASA launched Echo 2, a similar but larger satellite balloon, in January 1964. Echo 1A eventually ended its time in orbit on May 24, 1968, when it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere.Echo 1A was an important proof of concept, but it was not a full communications network. Its passive design needed powerful ground transmitters and large receiving antennas, making it less practical than the active satellites that came later.Still, it showed that signals could be sent through space, paving the way for satellite-based television, telephone links, navigation and global data networks. By the time Echo 2 launched in 1964, active communications satellites had already shown greater potential.

US President Donald Trump announced that American citizen and former marine Robert Gilman has been released from Russian custody and is on his way back to the United States, saying Russia agreed to free him on humanitarian grounds with no exchange involved.“I am proud to announce that American Citizen Robert Gilman, a former United States Marine, is coming HOME!” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “After my discussions with President Vladimir Putin, Russia has agreed to release him, very much on a Humanitarian Basis. We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return — No exchange took place.”Trump said Gilman would land at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, DC, on Tuesday night, where representatives would welcome him back. He added that he had spoken to Gilman, who had one request: “A GREAT cheeseburger when he lands. I will take care of that!”“During my Administration, we have prioritized bringing home Americans Detained Abroad, and have done so at a level never seen before, returning hundreds of people to their families,” Trump said.Gilman, 32, had been in Russian custody since 2022, when he was arrested for allegedly beating a police officer after being taken off a train for causing a disturbance. He was initially sentenced to three years, but his sentence was extended multiple times, to seven years in 2024 and later to 10 years after additional convictions for assaulting prison guards.His health deteriorated significantly during his detention. FSSAI tightens pan masala packaging norms; bans plastic, foil and synthetic laminates | India News

NEW DELHI: India’s food safety regulator has barred the use of plastic and plastic-laminated packaging for pan masala, under an amendment aimed at tightening existing packaging norms, according to a press release.The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has specified that pan masala may now only be packaged in paper, paperboard, cellulose, or other naturally derived materials. Such materials must be entirely free of plastic, including polyethene, polypropylene, polyester, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and other synthetic polymers, copolymers or laminates, as well as aluminium foil or metallised layers, the release said. Tin and glass containers continue to be permitted, it added.The press release further stated that packaging will also need to conform to clauses (f) and (i) of sub-rule 1 of rule 4 of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, framed under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.The amendment has been incorporated as a new entry in Schedule IV of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, which lists suggested packaging materials. It has been placed right after the existing entries at Serial Number 10, the release said.

The alternative, they fear, is a wider US-Iran confrontation that could put oil, gas, power and water facilities across the region at greater risk.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="4"/>Although, negotiations have stalled in recent days. Iran is seeking financial relief and a prohibition on US and Israeli warships in the strait, while Washington has rejected any arrangement that would allow Tehran to impose restrictions on shipping.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="8"/>The impasse has prolonged the disruption to one of the world’s most important energy routes. Oil shipments through Hormuz have fallen sharply since the conflict began, with Kpler estimating crude exports at around 2.2 million barrels per day last week, compared with about 8.5 million barrels a month earlier. Before the war, the waterway carried roughly 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products a day.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="10"/></p> <p><h2>Struggle to find alternatives</h2> </p> <p>Regional producers have tried to keep exports moving without relying entirely on the strait, but those efforts have offered only limited protection.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="14"/>The UAE managed to bring its oil exports back to prewar levels by mid-year by routing oil across the desert around the Hormuz blockade and moving some ships through the strait, according to ship tracker Vortexa. Those gains have since been eroded by Iranian attacks.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="16"/>Saudi Arabia has also used an alternative export route, pumping oil across the desert to a port on the Red Sea. But that route has come under attack from the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="19"/>The threat has extended beyond the Gulf. A drone attack on a gas tanker at Egypt’s port of Damietta, which set two ships on fire, meaning that energy shipments remain vulnerable even outside Hormuz.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="21"/>“In this background the Arab Gulf states cannot really ensure complete safety and openness of the Strait of Hormuz and can no longer rely upon it for transport or trade,” said Umer Karim, a researcher in Gulf security matters at the University of Birmingham. “Thus there is no other option for now but to concede to a degree to Iranian demands.”<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="25"/>The wider security threat is also making alternative routes harder to rely on. Between February 28 and July 30, Iran and allied militias in Iraq carried out at least 172 attacks on non-military infrastructure across the six Arab Gulf states, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project. Energy facilities, including oil infrastructure, gas plants, power stations and desalination facilities, accounted for about half of those.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="28"/>Gulf states are consequently looking at longer-term ways to reduce their dependence on Hormuz, including expanding pipelines to the Red Sea and Gulf of Oman and increasing storage capacity. Producers have also tried moving cargoes through the strait with their location beacons switched off.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="30"/></p> <p><h2>Why Gulf states may accept ‘bad deal’</h2> </p> <p>The immediate concern for Gulf governments is that renewed fighting could cause even greater damage to energy infrastructure and further deter foreign investment and tourism.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="34"/>Oil prices have eased from their wartime highs amid subdued demand in major economies, but global inventories have fallen by more than 400 million barrels over the past six months. That leaves the market with less of a cushion against another supply shock.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="36"/>Iranian officials have also signalled that reopening Hormuz will come with conditions. As you know this type of development, in the wrong hands, could lead to new bioweapons that result in the deaths of tens of millions of people.</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="18"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">Last month, the world found out OpenAI lost control of an AI model. After conducting internal reviews, Anthropic and Meta reported their models similarly escaped their control.</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="20"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">One of the targeted companies called the AI hack “an unprecedented event” that deserves an “unprecedented response.” Yoshua Bengio, the most cited living scientist in the world, said these incidents “should serve as a wake-up call.”</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="23"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">I agree.</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="25"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">So do the top scientists at the companies you lead, the very people building this technology. As you know, these technology leaders recently called for the international community to create a safety mechanism—a pause button—to avoid catastrophe. They warned there is a “real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.”</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="27"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">And yet, at a moment when we have seen human loss of control and the creation of potentially dangerous viruses, your companies are still racing ahead— investing tens of billions of dollars into a technology that nobody can fully understand, predict or control.</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="30"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">That is absurd, irresponsible and extremely dangerous. It is also a betrayal of your own stated commitments:</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="32"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">• In 2023, Anthropic said it would “commit to pause the scaling and/or delay the deployment of new models whenever our scaling ability outstrips our ability to comply with. . . safety procedures.”</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="35"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">• In 2025, Meta said “if a frontier AI is assessed to have reached the critical risk threshold and cannot be mitigated, we will stop development.”</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="38"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">• That same year, OpenAI said it would “halt further development” until strong safeguards were in place if AI capabilities ever reached a “critical” threshold.</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="40"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">That moment is here. AI capabilities HAVE reached a critical threshold. There is a reason why the head of the CIA says that AI models are “akin to digital nuclear weapons” and “almost like a doomsday device.”</span><span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="42"/><span class="em" data-ua-type="1" onclick="stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)">Mr. Altman, Mr. Amodei and Mr. Zuckerberg: In the interest of humanity, stand by your words. Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster. The new FIR lodged at Khardah police station is based on a complaint by the family of the deceased that the body was cremated in a hurry without the consent of the family members to hush up evidence,” the officer told news agency PTI.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="14"/>This comes days after chief minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to register a separate case into the circumstances surrounding the cremation.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="17"/>“The role of Ghosh, Dey and Mukherjee in the cremation needs to be investigated. I have ordered the registration of a new case separately, apart from the court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). issue.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="34"/>During the event, members of the gathering reportedly chanted Trisha’s name, following which Udhayanidhi allegedly made a double-meaning remark involving the actor.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="37"/>The remark triggered a political and legal row, with Thanjavur police registering a case against Udhayanidhi under provisions of the The date, earlier fixed at January 1, 2006, would now move to January 1, 2025 under a new bill introduced in the Delhi Assembly.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="3"/>The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was tabled in the Assembly on Monday to amend the DUSIB Act, 2010. Under the current law, a jhuggi-jhopri basti is defined, among other things, as a settlement with at least 50 households existing on January 1, 2006.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="5"/>With the amendment, settlements that came up between 2006 and 2025 could now be considered for rehabilitation and relocation, subject to other conditions. It also allows private companies or slum cooperatives to take part in redevelopment projects.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="10"/>The bill also notes that changing the cut-off date could bring more settlements under the definition of a jhuggi-jhopri basti. This, in turn, would increase the financial burden on the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="13"/>Under the bill, DUSIB can prepare plans to remove jhuggi-jhopri bastis and rehabilitate residents. Its financial memorandum states that such relocation would need funds from both the Delhi government and DUSIB, along with contributions from landowners and jhuggi dwellers towards the cost of new houses.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="17"/>The bill also requires DUSIB to improve basic facilities in these settlements, including toilets, bathing areas, drainage, water supply and paved streets.<span class="id-r-component br" data-pos="19"/>With the landowner’s consent, DUSIB can also plan for rehabilitation, relocation, or in-situ upgradation, meaning the settlement is improved
