Bernie Sanders to CEO of tech companies whose AI models hacked other organisations: Stop building machines that humans cannot …

US Senator Bernie Sanders has issued a warning to the leaders of three top artificial intelligence (AI) companies, demanding an immediate halt to the development of autonomous models after recent incidents where AI agents breached external systems. In an open letter addressed to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the Vermont independent urged executives to “stop building machines that humans cannot control,” warning that Congress will step in if the tech industry fails to police itself.

AI agent hacking incidents drive political pushback

Sanders’ demands follow public disclosures surrounding autonomous security breaches. Specifically, the senator highlighted a July incident where a frontier AI agent escaped OpenAI’s isolated testing environment and hacked into the software platform Hugging Face, an event OpenAI subsequently characterised as an “unprecedented cyber incident.”In his letter, Sanders called on the CEOs to implement a voluntary pause on frontier AI development.

Read Bernie Sanders’ letter to Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg

Dear Mr. Altman, Mr. Amodei and Mr. Zuckerberg:Almost every day, there is a new story about how your companies are losing control of the AI technology you are developing, with potentially cataclysmic results. This week we learned, frighteningly, that AI has been used for the first time ever to create new viruses. As you know this type of development, in the wrong hands, could lead to new bioweapons that result in the deaths of tens of millions of people.Last month, the world found out OpenAI lost control of an AI model. The result? The model hacked into another company’s computers—a clear violation of federal law. After conducting internal reviews, Anthropic and Meta reported their models similarly escaped their control. One of the targeted companies called the AI hack “an unprecedented event” that deserves an “unprecedented response.” Yoshua Bengio, the most cited living scientist in the world, said these incidents “should serve as a wake-up call.”I agree. So do the top scientists at the companies you lead, the very people building this technology. As you know, these technology leaders recently called for the international community to create a safety mechanism—a pause button—to avoid catastrophe. They warned there is a “real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.”And yet, at a moment when we have seen human loss of control and the creation of potentially dangerous viruses, your companies are still racing ahead— investing tens of billions of dollars into a technology that nobody can fully understand, predict or control. That is absurd, irresponsible and extremely dangerous. It is also a betrayal of your own stated commitments:• In 2023, Anthropic said it would “commit to pause the scaling and/or delay the deployment of new models whenever our scaling ability outstrips our ability to comply with. . . safety procedures.”• In 2025, Meta said “if a frontier AI is assessed to have reached the critical risk threshold and cannot be mitigated, we will stop development.”• That same year, OpenAI said it would “halt further development” until strong safeguards were in place if AI capabilities ever reached a “critical” threshold. That moment is here. AI capabilities HAVE reached a critical threshold. There is a reason why the head of the CIA says that AI models are “akin to digital nuclear weapons” and “almost like a doomsday device.”Mr. Altman, Mr. Amodei and Mr. Zuckerberg: In the interest of humanity, stand by your words. Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster. Stop building machines that humans cannot control.Let me be very clear: If you do not take appropriate action now, my colleagues and I in the U.S. Senate will.Sincerely,BERNARD SANDERSUNITED STATES SENATOR

RG Kar case: FIR against ex-TMC MLA over 'hurried' cremation of rape victim

NEW DELHI: West Bengal officials on Tuesday registered an FIR against former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh in connection with the alleged hurried cremation of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year.Additionally, Panihati Municipality councillor Somnath Dey and Sanjeev Mukherjee, a neighbour of the victim’s family, were also named in the FIR.The case was registered on the basis of a complaint by the deceased doctor’s father, who alleged that the cremation was carried out in undue haste under the supervision of the three accused. The FIR was registered at Khardah police station and alleged that the victim’s cremation was carried out in haste to prevent the possibility of an autopsy and thus conceal evidence.“The CBI is probing the rape and murder case at RG Kar hospital, which falls under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police. The new FIR lodged at Khardah police station is based on a complaint by the family of the deceased that the body was cremated in a hurry without the consent of the family members to hush up evidence,” the officer told news agency PTI.This comes days after chief minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to register a separate case into the circumstances surrounding the cremation.“The role of Ghosh, Dey and Mukherjee in the cremation needs to be investigated. I have ordered the registration of a new case separately, apart from the court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). I have asked the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to take necessary steps in this regard,” he had said on August 8.
